Sonic Robo Blast 2 is a free, open-source 3D Sonic fan game that recreates the speed, exploration, and charm of classic Sega Genesis Sonic titles in a fully 3D world. Developed by Sonic Team Junior and in active development since 1998, SRB2 runs on a heavily modified Doom Legacy engine, delivering surprisingly large levels, vertical platforming, and smooth high-speed gameplay.
Unlike many official 3D Sonic games, Sonic Robo Blast 2 focuses on open-ended level design. Each stage features multiple routes, hidden paths, collectibles, and character-specific shortcuts that reward exploration and replayability. Players travel through diverse zones like Greenflower, Techno Hill, Deep Sea, and Egg Rock, each ending with a boss battle against Dr. Eggman.
SRB2 includes six playable characters, each with unique abilities. Sonic uses the Speed Thok for burst movement, Tails can fly, Knuckles glides and climbs walls, while unlockable characters like Amy, Fang, and Metal Sonic introduce new mechanics and advanced gameplay styles. Collecting Chaos Emeralds through Special Stages unlocks powerful Super transformations with increased speed and abilities.
The game supports single-player, split-screen multiplayer, and online netplay, allowing players to race, compete, or complete the campaign cooperatively. A massive modding community expands the experience with custom characters, levels, and total conversions like SRB2 Kart.
