Sonic.EXE - The Original Game is a cult-classic horror Sonic fan game that reimagines Sega’s iconic platformer as a disturbing psychological experience. Created by Adam Gavigan (MY5TCrimson) and released in 2012, the game blends simple side-scrolling gameplay with unsettling visuals, eerie sound design, and relentless chase sequences.
Players control Tails, Knuckles, and Dr. Eggman as they explore corrupted versions of familiar Sonic zones that gradually decay into nightmarish landscapes. What begins as empty and quiet soon reveals dead animals, glitch effects, warped music, and sudden appearances of Sonic.EXE, an entity that hunts the player rather than races them. Each character’s level builds tension differently, ending in scripted encounters that reinforce the game’s sense of helplessness.
Hidden paths, accessed by moving against Sonic tradition and running left, unlock secret stages, black Rings, and cryptic messages that expand the game’s lore. Collecting all secrets reveals additional endings and a chilling final sequence. Playable online for free, Sonic.EXE remains a landmark in retro horror gaming.
